ALAN J. KNAUF is a partner in the law firm of Knauf Shaw LLP, located at 975 Crossroads Building, 2 State Street, Rochester, New York 14614.  He concentrates his practice in the areas of environmental (including SEQRA, brownfield development, hazardous and solid waste, Superfund and oil spills, and air and water pollution issues), municipal and land use law, civil litigation, and real estate, representing businesses, developers, landowners, governments, and citizens.

LAND USE/ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REVIEW - Handles land use issues before local boards, advises municipalities, citizens and developers on compliance with the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), litigates project permitting, SEQRA and zoning issues.

BROWNFIELD DEVELOPMENT - Represents clients purchasing and selling contaminated industrial properties, including negotiation of releases under New York Voluntary Cleanup Program, environmental indemnifications and no-further action letters, handles local zoning and real estate contract, closing and title issues.

SUPERFUND - Negotiates remedial plans and consent orders, handles delisting petitions, litigates Superfund cost recovery actions.

PETROLEUM SPILLS - Prosecutes and defends cost recovery and property damage actions under New York Oil Spill Law for impacted property owners, negotiates remedial plans and consent orders.

CLEAN WATER ACT - Litigates compliance cases, advises clients on regulatory compliance.

ENVIRONMENTAL TORTS - Litigates trespass and nuisance claims on behalf of contaminated property owners, prosecutes and defends toxic tort claims.

MUNICIPAL LAW - Represents municipalities as special counsel on complex issues and litigation, drafts zoning and local legislation, serves as attorney for the Town of Huron.

REAL ESTATE - Represents buyers and sellers in commercial real estate transactions, including Brownfield properties.

Knauf is Co-Chair of the Task Force on Navigation Law, Petroleum & Related Issues of the  New York State Bar Association Environmental Law Section, is a former Co-Chair of its Internet and Toxic Torts Committees, serves on the Executive Committee of that Section, and received the Section Council Award in 2000.  He was founding Chairperson of the Environmental Law Committee, and is Chair of the Real Estate Council, of the Monroe County Bar Association.   Knauf served as Chairman of the Center for Environmental Information, Inc. (CEI) from 1994-1996, and chaired CEI's Annual Survey Course in Environmental Law from 1986 to 2002.  Knauf has served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Environmental Law at the University of Rochester, is an Adjunct Professor of Emergency Preparedness Laws and Regulations at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and is Vice-President of American Recycling & Manufacturing Company, Inc., which manages industrial returnable packaging systems, and a partner in 58 McKee Road Co., LLC, a developer of brownfield properties.  Knauf maintains the New York Environmental Law Center on the Internet at www.nyenvlaw.com.

Knauf received a B.S.C.E. in Environmental Engineering from M.I.T. in 1977, and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1980.  He is admitted to the bars of New York, Florida, and various  federal courts.  Knauf was counsel in the following reported cases:
